As many of you are aware there is a recall effort to remove Governor Gavin Newsom from office. The recall election is set for Tuesday, September 14th 2021, and the last day to register to vote is Monday, August 30th 2021.
The Local 16 PAC STRONGLY URGES all members to vote NO on the recall. Please note, Gavin Newsom is NOT on the ballot, which means a ‘No’ vote defeats the recall in favor of Gov. Newsom finishing his term till 2022. The governor was democratically elected in 2018 with over 60% of the vote. This recall is another attempt by the .001% to control the future of CA politics, democracy, and our lives. If ‘No’ on the recall does not receive the majority of the vote, then Govenor Newsom’s successor would unseat him with less than 30% of voters’ support. It’s worth noting that a recall election draws far fewer voters than normal election cycles. The 400-million-dollar taxpayer sponsored recall election to remove Governor Newsom, could make it easier for .001% to purchase more right-to-work legislation like Prop 22 for the ‘22 election. Californians welcome a healthy debate when it comes to governing and we all look forward to one in the next election. Again, Vote NO on the recall on Tuesday Sept 14th, 2021.
As for federal pro-labor legislation; the PRO Act, which is short for “Protect the Right to Organize Act and is being backed by California Senators Feinstein and Padilla. However, it is currently stalled in the US Senate, and Labor Councils are phone banking Arizona Senators Kelly and Sinema to support this bill. With more Democratic support, under the PRO-Act labor could see a federal law protecting worker’s right to organize. If any members would like to contribute towards the effort, then please contact Senators Feinstein and Padilla to show your support for the PRO-Act.
As the Covid-19 pandemic continues, health officials are warning of the Delta variant’s spread amongst the unvaccinated, and the significant roadblock it has to the global recovery. If any members are medically cleared and open to vaccination, then please do so ASAP in order to avoid future work restrictions. With that said, employers from theaters to Live Nation have been setting work policy requiring all techs to have the Covid-19 vaccine. The US courts have been backing this employer policy, and their right to ask if the possible hire or employee is vaccinated for Covid-19, and the only answer needed is a ‘yes or no’.
Returning our focus to new CA law, companies with 5 or more employees are now required to attend an hour long online Sexual Harassment and Abusive Conduct Prevention Training. The online training is available at The Department of Fair Employment and Housing website and you can find the link at our website: www.local16.org. If you complete the training, then please send it to training@local16.org.
In closing we wish all you good health and hope to see you all on the jobsite soon.
